InsiJets is committed to reducing CO2 emissions

The convenience and amount of time saved when using private jets are the generally recognized advantages.  Indeed, both factors carry significant weight in the decision to use these services.
Nevertheless, private flights are often “demonized” by public opinion. They are accused of being, relatively speaking, less efficient in reducing carbon emissions than commercial flights. However, a close analysis of the facts points in the opposite direction.

Carbon emissions from commercial vs. private flights

Let’s compare the emissions of a 150-passenger commercial airliner and an 8-passenger private jet. A Boeing 737 emits about 149 tons of CO2 during a 3-hour round trip. On the same trip, a Cessna Citation XLS emits 12.52 tons of CO2. The actual data belies the hasty judgments. Access to private terminals reduces time in the air and on the ground. Both the privileged locations and lower traffic density lead to minor fuel burn. Consequently, reducing CO2 emissions.

InsiJets and CO2 offset projects

InsiJets participates in carbon offset programs. Such programs have enabled the industry to become a key partner in global reforestation. The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) demonstrates the positive effect. COSIA is an initiative of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to offset CO2 emissions. Inclusion in this program is voluntary for aviation organizations and enterprises until 2027.
Additionally, InsiJets has fulfilled offset commitments that go beyond the CORSIA requirements. These consist of voluntarily supporting projects for the protection and restoration of threatened ecosystems. The financial contributions aim to mitigate climate change, primarily through investing in developing countries. Two excellent examples of these programmes are:

Forest plantations in Guanaré

Cerro Largo in the Central Eastern region of Uruguay is the location of this afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation project.. To date, it has transformed almost 22,000 hectares of pastureland into sustainable forests. In 2014, it received a verification report claiming its action was equivalent to reducing 3 million tons of CO2. Over its lifetime, it expects to absorb more than 7.5 million tons of carbon emissions.
The program also has a long-term environmental and economic impact. Forest plantations generate high-value timber products that can be harvested over time. Sustainable timber exploitation is more profitable than livestock production. The project facilitates the support of the growth of small family businesses. It has also boosted the rural labour market, creating almost 1,000 jobs.
The recovery of endangered native species is another outcome of the project, as evidenced in the proliferation of birds, frogs, and mammals. Thanks to the forestry plantations, the soil has been protected from erosion and runoff.
The Guanaré initiative also contributes to the achievement of three Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda:

Pacajai Project

This project aims to prevent deforestation in a small region in the state of Pará, Brazil. It seeks to prevent interventions in the local ecosystem, which could affect an area of 120 thousand hectares. To do so, it has limited the cultivated land, reclassifying a sector as a “private reserve.” Similarly, it has reduced cassava cultivation, replacing it with other products that have smaller footprints.
The regeneration of the forest will prevent the emission of more than 9,500 tons of CO2 over 40 years.
It also addresses socio-economic factors by promoting land tenure for some 200 families in the area. The project grants rights over the areas surrounding the reserve and enables the sustainable management of natural resources.
The Pacajai project aims to achieve the following Sustainable Development Goals:

Verra accreditation ensures the legitimacy and efficiency of emission reduction programs

Verra accreditation ensures the legitimacy and efficiency of emission reduction programs

Investing in forestry projects mitigates and slows down climate impact, thereby contributing significantly to reducing emissions. The aviation industry is firmly committed to this alternative to contribute to net-zero travel.
Verra, formerly known as the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), recognises the projects mentioned above. Verra is the most widely accepted carbon emissions reduction certification. As an official system is not currently in effect, this standard is applied and endorsed by a non-profit organization. It aims to ensure the credibility of emission reduction initiatives. Verra-certified projects must meet several requirements and pass a rigorous evaluation process.
The estimated reductions are converted into Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) that can be traded on the carbon market. Thus, VCUs allow companies as well as individuals to buy credits to offset their emissions.

Green InsiJets and the transition to a green economy

In addition to participation in carbon markets, the industry invests in researching more sustainable fuels and green solutions. However, other avenues remain open to exploration. For example, offering customers the option of offsetting flight emissions can be looked at more closely.
Few airlines have considered this alternative. The lack of transparent systems and intuitive processes makes it challenging to implement this option. However, reducing the carbon footprint is a significant concern for all of us. Recent surveys have revealed that travellers are willing to contribute to reducing emissions.
Forestry projects are one of the most effective ways to minimize climate change. Securing one metric ton of CO2 through reforestation requires a far smaller investment than any other initiative. It represents just $5 to $10 of the value of a bus ticket.
Nevertheless, we must bear in mind that the ultimate goal is to reduce the carbon footprint and improve the planet. With direct donations, we can surpass the plan and achieve 500% cleaner flights by 2022.
